Improve Collaboration

Working together on a tablet

Every department will want to add their data to the interactive map, making it easier for everyone to collaborate and present a whole port picture

Staff at every port can be heard complaining about “data silos”, but few ports know how to break down the barriers that stand in the way of improved collaboration. A map viewer built for the specific needs of ports is a powerful way for enabling internal users and, if appropriate, external stakeholders as well to share their data with each other, without relinquishing autonomy and control over their data. Using the location, which is inherent to most databases or even spreadsheets at a port, different and often disparate data can be shown together, analyzed, understood, and used to empower better decision making.

With the NSG Port Solution, it is easy to collect, link and integrate data between individuals and departments. For example, engineering data can be displayed in such a way that staff can locate buried utilities, environmental professional can attach groundwater monitoring databases to their monitoring well locations, security staff can access their cameras from a map and also determine what might be in sight of the current fields of view of cameras, and operations managers can access AIS vessel tracking data on top of the port terminals or bathymetry map layers.

In addition to displaying data, software tools can be used to put this data to work.

The Port of Tacoma is using the NSG Port Solution’s Situation Planning Tools for mapping time-sensitive planned and security situations and events in the port, which ensures that all port employees are aware of upcoming events and can contribute to or make the others aware of conflicts. In this way, maps are used to gather and access data, act as the foundation for planning, and the means for communicating these plans inside or outside the port.
