Week 5 as a GIS intern

This week has gone really quickly. I finished off creating an MXD and MSD for a client who we are creating a new viewer for. I was shown a video that Esri has released on how to design effective amp services. This video was really helpful as it explained things such as MSD’s really simply, and also went into detail about what things could be done to make an MSD run as fast as possible. As well as creating the MSD I also had a brief look at mobile. It was evident very quickly the reasons why I am often told at uni that all layers must have the same spatial reference- one reason being that it isn’t possible to add layers with different spatial references into ArcGIS Mobile. I quite enjoyed the challenge of having to create the MSD so hopefully I may get to do more of that next year.

Week 4 as a GIS intern with EGL

This past week has consisted of a few tasks that have reinforced ideas that I have briefly covered in my studies. On Monday I continued to work on an MXD which will be used to create a client’s new viewer, I was meant to spend most of this week on that project, however I am waiting for some data so hopefully I will have access to that early next week so I can get on with that project- I’m looking forward to working on this project as I will get a chance to have a look at Mobile Project Centre and also Essentials.

Week 3 as a GIS intern

The past three weeks have gone so quickly, it’s hard to believe that I have been a GIS intern for three weeks already. This week started off pretty slow with most of my time spent scanning… one bonus of all this scanning is that I haven’t felt so guilty if I don’t go for a run after work as the scanner is upstairs and I have to press scan on my computer downstairs.

Customer Care – myth or reality?

If you look on most organisations websites you will probably find something which eludes towards Customer Service – or even Customer Care explicitly named. Esri has a Customer Care Portal - it is where you can download your software from, monitor support requests, check on your licensing, re-visit training, etc. It is essentially a portal which helps you, the customer, to help yourself.

Interesting Times in GIS

It’s an interesting time to be a GIS professional.

Having lived through the transition of GIS from departmental tool to enterprise asset, we’re now seeing an entirely new phenomenon gathering considerable pace: neogeography. We first saw neogeography when Google Maps emerged and introduced GIS to the masses. It didn’t really of course but it did help my Mum understand what I do. Suddenly maps became relevant to the consumer. And the GIS professional dismissed it as ‘consumer mapping’; irrelevant and scary all at the same time.
